DonateApp for Discord: Bringing Charitable Giving to Online Communities

Overview

DonateApp for Discord was a slash-command-powered donation bot that allowed Discord server admins to feature a charity and enable seamless in-app giving. Designed to integrate ChangeUp’s donation technology with the Discord ecosystem, DonateApp provided an admin dashboard for campaign setup and an intuitive donor experience within Discord chat. The tool gained early traction, launching with high-profile supporters like Imagine Dragons and Lindsey Stirling.

Objective

Create an engaging and frictionless way for Discord communities to support charitable causes, leveraging Discord’s native bot system and slash commands for a seamless donation experience.

My Role

Senior Product Designer
  • Led end-to-end product design, ensuring seamless UX/UI for both admins and donors.
  • Conducted Discord-specific research, learning how bots, slash commands, and community interactions are powered.
  • Designed and prototyped admin and donor flows, optimizing for usability and accessibility.
  • Worked with an offshore development team in Costa Rica to implement the bot and donation platform.
  • Coordinated with a dedicated testing team to ensure a smooth launch.
  • Set up and managed the Discord support channel, providing user assistance and feedback collection.
  • Oversaw placement and marketing of DonateApp in Discord’s Bot Store, optimizing visibility.
